Cannon Beach, Oregon | Travel Guide

Cannon Beach Travel GuideIf you haven’t been to Cannon Beach yet, make sure you add it to your bucket list soon as it is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific Coast and definitely worthy of a visit. Its town is absolutely charming, the seashore is stunning, and there is a abundance of good food here. As I have lived in Oregon my whole life, I have seen a great deal of the Oregon coast; out of all of the beaches I have visited in this state, Cannon Beach is by far one of my favorites. This picturesque little haven holds so many wonderful memories for me, and every time I think of summer I get excited about coming here. I really cannot recommend it enough. So if you are planning a visit to this seaside, here’s a quick little guide to help you out!

chocolate (1)cannon beach sandWhere To Eat

Pizza a’fetta

Operating hours vary per month.

One of my favorite places to eat at in Cannon Beach is Pizza a’fetta. I went there for the first time a few years ago and was happily surprised at just how fantastic their pizza is! Everything about it is wonderful: great sauce, mouthwatering crust, large portions… Yumm, yumm, yumm.

Pizza a’fetta was established in 1988, is located on the main beach strip, and is ranked top 50 in the nation. Indoor seating is very limited there, but there are plenty of chairs and benches outside. And if that is crowded, there is always plenty of beach to picnic on; so definitely give this pizza shop a try!

Tip: One thing I would recommend if you go here is doing a little math before you order. Some of the pizzas actually end up being cheaper if purchased by the slice as apposed to getting a large pizza, so you might want to just order eight slices. Not to mention, slice orders are also handed out ten times quicker.

crepes in cannon beach

Crêpe Neptune

Sunday – Friday 9am-6pm | Saturday 9am-7pm

Crêpe Neptune is a cute little crêperie situated in the center of Cannon Beach – a place which no trip to Cannon Beach is complete without a stop at. Their crêpes are so delicious. In fact, they are better than any of the ones I had in Paris and almost as good as those I had in San Francisco, which says a lot! So if you are a crêpe fan, then this shop needs to be on your list for Cannon Beach!

Insomnia Coffee

Monday – Sunday 8am-5pm

There are a few popular places to grab a coffee in Cannon Beach, but Insomnia is the one I would always pick. Their coffee is great and they have, hands down, the best atmosphere out of them all. I know looks aren’t everything, but decor is something I do happen to appreciate; so, as they have delicious coffee too, I think its safe to say that choosing the prettiest place is okay – just this once. ????

Another reason I really like Insomnia Coffee is because of their location. They are right next to the beach, on 2nd Street. This makes them handy for not only coffee, but bathrooms as well! Unlike Seaside, Cannon Beach does not have public restrooms at the beach. You actually have to walk quite a ways to get to them as they are located behind the main shopping strip. So if you’re on the beach and find yourself needing the restroom, go grab a coffee! You know, so you can go to their restroom…and then have to go to the bathroom an hour later when the coffee hits ????

haystack-rockbeach shoes beach haystack rockWhat To Do

Explore Haystack Rock

I am always surprised at how many people visit Cannon Beach, but don’t walk (or drive) up to Haystack Rock. It really is such a shame! So please, don’t be satisfied with just parking in the town and walking to the closest part of the beach. Haystack Rock is a must-see, and not from afar! It is spectacular to behold and exploring the base of it is a lot of fun. When the tide is down, there are many little pools to walk around and plenty of sea anemones and star fish to behold. Haystack is a photographers dream, so definitely visit with your camera.

sea-anemoneAlmost four miles of sandy beach stretches north and south of downtown Cannon Beach. Haystack rock is to the left of the town, but situated approximately midway on the beach. I would recommend walking from the town, as a stroll on the beach is so relaxing and fun. However, if you cannot walk that far (or simply do not want to), you can always drive through the town and then up into the neighborhoods above. During the week, you can usually find some parking along the street and there is a long stair access that you can use to reach the beach.

cannon beachcannon beach sunsetWatch The Sunset from Ecola State Park

Watching the sunset on the beach is lovely; however, if you only have one night here, definitely spend your sunset at Ecola State Park. This park is just up the hill from the town and its view is absolutely breathtaking. You can see Haystack Rock in the distance, as well as other beautiful rock formations. Being up on this cliff is certainly one of the most beautiful ways to enjoy Cannon Beach.

Another reason to visit Ecola Park is for whale watching. Last September I spotted a couple humpbacks from up here which was really neat. Every year people enjoy seeing whales as they migrate or make their return trips past this beach, so if its whale season when you visit, this is a good place to go!

You’d expect the whole pizza to be cheaper than the slices! At least then you can try different pizzas instead of just one 🙂 Chocolate&strawberry crepe looks so yummy, I haven’t had it for long time! Your photography is amazing, I really adore the view from Haystack Rack, you’d just watch it for hours! x

Thanks for all the advise! We have gone to Canon Beach twice this year. It’s amazing and way better then seaside in my opinion. Only one thing I would change about your post. I thought Insomnia Coffee was good, but Sleepy Monk Coffee was waaaay better. Actually my second trip there was almost only for their coffee 🙂 Sadly I found out when we got there that it is closed on Wednesdays. You have to check that place out!

  36. Davelyn

    September 6th, 2016 at 9:14 am

Yes, it is a lot less crowded than Seaside and a little more upscale. I will always love Seaside, though, as I spent so much time there as a teenager 🙂 Okay, I will check them out! Thanks for the recommendation!
